Her Melody Lingers On

Back in 2003, I was extremely fortunate to be invited to sit in and perform with the Old Dominion University Jazz Big Band and Small Combos led by a hero of mine, pianist John Toomey.  Getting the chance as a high school student to sit in with the college kids was thrilling for me.  One memory that will always stand out in my mind is the day I got to play duo with John.  Unbeknownst to me, there happened to be an additional piano in our rehearsal space, and as I was playing through Miles Davis’ Seven Steps to Heaven, John decided to join me for an impromptu jam.  I was flying high that day!

Fast forward 17 years, and I’m getting the chance to share the stage with Professor Toomey for our third duo concert at Chandler Hall.  This is special to me for the reason previously stated, but also because it is for such an important and meaningful scholarship.  We tragically lost Claire Cucchiari-Loring, a promising vocalist in Toomey's jazz choir, to a senseless act of violence. But through this scholarship in her memory, others will get the opportunity to pursue their own dream of making music.  This will be the 9th and final year, so please consider joining us for some good tunes, a great hang and a very worthy cause.

Concert: Diehn Center for the Performing Arts (Chandler Hall)
